One Goal, One Nightmare: Iraq Ends Indonesia’s World Cup Ambition

Jeddah, October 12, 2025 — The Indonesian national football team was officially eliminated from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers after losing 0–1 to Iraq at King Abdullah Sports City on Sunday, October 12, 2025, at 02:30 a.m. The defeat happened because Zidane Iqbal’s goal in the second half sealed Indonesia’s fate, ending their hopes of advancing to the next round.

According to CNBC Indonesia and Tirto.id, Iraq dominated most of the game, while Indonesia struggled to make use of several scoring chances. The only goal came in the 75th minute when Zidane Iqbal broke through the defense and scored with a precise strike.

As Tempo.co reported, this result means Indonesia can no longer reach the required points to move to the next stage of the Asian qualifiers. It was also Indonesia’s second consecutive loss after being defeated by Saudi Arabia last week.

As reported by Detik.com, many analysts highlighted that Indonesia’s attacking line lacked sharpness, and several defensive mistakes gave Iraq crucial opportunities.

Although this defeat ends Indonesia’s journey to the 2026 World Cup, coaches and fans believe it should serve as a valuable lesson for the future. “It’s a painful result, but the players gave their all,” said coach Patrick Kluivert, as quoted by local media.
