Free Rides for Women on Kartini Day: TransJakarta, MRT, and LRT Join the Celebration

Jakarta is marking Kartini Day, April 21, 2024, with a heartwarming initiative: free rides for all female passengers on TransJakarta, MRT Jakarta, and LRT Jakarta. As a tribute to Raden Ajeng Kartini, Indonesia’s national heroine and a pioneer of women’s rights, this gesture aims to reflect both appreciation and empowerment for women across the capital.

Women who board public transport on Sunday will be able to ride at no cost throughout the day, with no special registration required. The fare gates will recognize female passengers tapping in with their electronic transport cards, but automatically apply a zero-rupiah fare.

To support the program’s implementation, special gates will be prepared in several locations. According to Sigit Wijatmoko, Head of Jakarta Transportation Agency, this measure is to ensure that the process remains smooth and efficient.

"We’re preparing dedicated gates at several shelters and stations to ensure female passengers can be served properly," said Sigit, as quoted by Detik.

The move is supported by all major operators. In a joint statement, MRT Jakarta, LRT Jakarta, and TransJakarta confirmed that their systems are ready for this one-day initiative.

“This is our way of appreciating the important role of women in society. On Kartini Day, women can travel comfortably and safely without paying a fare,” the statement reads, as reported by Kumparan.

Social media users have responded positively to the announcement, with many expressing appreciation for the city’s efforts to celebrate women not just symbolically but in practice — by offering them access and convenience.

On-ground staff and volunteers will be available to guide passengers through the process, especially those unfamiliar with the system. Clear signage will also be installed to indicate which gates are designated for the Kartini Day promotion.

This initiative stands as more than a free ride — it’s a symbolic journey toward gender equality and inclusion in public spaces. For the women of Jakarta, Sunday’s commute may be routine, but this time, it comes with a meaningful message: You are valued. You are celebrated.
